Two decades ago, Hacienda Luisita was subjected under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). The Stock Distribution Option was implemented.
21 years under the program, the farmers of Hacienda Luisita were reduced to mere “employees’’ of the vast sugar land estate who had to earn their shares of profit by working beyond their means in the plantation.
The scheme proved to be fatal for the farmer-workers as they were confronted with scarcity of job and reduced man-days in the succeeding years because of the mechanization of the plantation and the conversion of sizable portions of land to industrial parks. The value of the shares of the farmers has been cut down to a pittance making it hardly for any farmer’s family to make both ends meet. On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, the Hacienda Luisita Peasant Supporters Network in partnership with Kilometer 64 Poetry Collective and Artist Arrest will launch a Blog Action Day with the theme: "Bayan ay hindi lalaya, kung ang Magsasaka ay walang sariling lupa."
